Japan Day @ Central Park 2010 is scheduled for Sunday, June 6th in Central Park's East Meadow.

The event was designed by the Japanese community of New York with three missions in mind: 1) to promote deeper understanding of Japanese Culture, 2) to say "Thank you, New York!" for providing such a nurturing home to America's largest Japanese Community, and 3) to strengthen relationships within the Japanese grassroots community.

Marking its fourth year as a New York City tradition, Japan Day @ Central Park will return to fill the green oasis of East Meadow with tents offering a wide range of Japanese traditional and family-friendly activities, free samplings of popular Japanese cuisine and powerful stage performances throughout the day, with top entertainers from New York and Tokyo. As in previous years, Japan Day is planned to kick off with the Japan Run, a mini-marathon, at 8AM, followed by the Japanese Day Festival in the East Meadow at 10AM with the opening of all activity tents and the stage show. And because 2010 marks the 150th anniversary of the First Japanese Diplomatic Mission to New York, there will be special activities to commemorate this historic milestone.

In 2009, over 45,000 New Yorkers participated in Japan Day @ Central Park. We hope Japan Day 2010 will once again bring thousands of New Yorkers to East Meadow to share the joy of Japanese culture!

Japan Dayとは、

1. 日本文化の紹介を通じた日米市民の交流と相互理解の促進　
2. 我々日本人を暖かく迎え入れてくれているニューヨークへの感謝の表明　
3. 在留邦人や日系米国人など日本にゆかりのある方々の草の根交流と連帯強化

を３つの目的として2007年に初めて開催された「日本文化の紹介イベント」です。

第４回目となる2010年度のJapan Day @ Central Parkは、６月６日に開催される予定です。例年通り、パーク内でのミニマラソン「Japan Run」とメインイベントの「Japan Day Festival」の２部構成が検討されており、フェスティバルの会場にはイーストメドーが予定されております。また、今年は遣米使節団ニューヨーク来訪１５０周年にあたり、それを記念するような行事をイベントに盛り込むことが検討されています。

昨年は、約４万５千人を超える在留邦人やニューヨーカーの方々がイベントに参加され、大都会の摩天楼に囲まれた自然のオアシス、セントラルパークで「日本」を満喫されました。Japan Runで始まったイベントは、その後メイン会場にて、日本の伝統的なダンス、和太鼓、そして空手といったパフォーマンスで盛り上がりをみせた一方で日本文化を体感できる会場内ブースでは、伝統的な文化である折り紙や習字、お祭りに欠かせないヨーヨーつりなど子供から大人まで楽しめる幅広いアトラクションが勢ぞろいし、どのブースにも長蛇の列が出来るほどの盛況ぶりでした。盆踊りやスタンプラリーなど参加型企画へも大勢の方が楽しまれました。その他、餃子、牛丼、讃岐うどん、みそ汁、チャウメンなどが来場者に振舞われたほか、ステージ上では、川島あいさん、オレンジペコ、増田太郎さんなどの日本の歌手によるパフォーマンスライブも開催され、夕方の５時のイベント閉幕を迎えるまで、会場内は参加者、出演者たちの熱気に包まれました。

Japan Day 2010実行委員会では、ニューヨークにおける日米文化交流の特使ともいえる「Japan Day」を毎年開催することで、さらなる日本文化への理解促進、日米交流に働きかけ、今後ニューヨークに末永く根付く息の長いイベントとして発展することを願っています。
